Second Space is an upcycling clothing concept created by Ira Heikkinen as a thesis project for the HAY Second Hand company. The aim of the work was to extend the product’s life cycle and increase its value through upcycling methods. Special attention was paid to the principles of the circular economy—how materials circulate from discarded textiles to the designer, the company, the customer, and back to the beginning of a new cycle. The concept offers a functional system between the designer and a second-hand company, while also providing consumers with alternative and ecological fashion. This work was also awarded a high-quality thesis grant. The product concept was presented in a fashion show at the Finnish Craft & Design Fair 2023.
